AI Engineer
A new professional role: shipping AI products by composing models, prompts, tools, and APIs.
Also known as: Applied AI Engineer · LLM Engineer · GenAI Engineer
What is AI Engineer?
The AI Engineer is the dominant new job created by the LLM era. Unlike an ML researcher (who trains models) or a data scientist (who analyses data), an AI engineer ships AI products — combining off-the-shelf foundation models with prompts, RAG, tools, evals, and orchestration to deliver real user value. Most ONROL graduates target this role because it requires no PhD, pays well in India and globally, and is the job most companies are actually hiring for in 2026.
